Of all the regions in Southern Ontario the area in and around Terra Cotta probably has some of the best roads for cycling. The reason for this is Caledon Mountain and the quiet roads that twists and turns along its flanks. The mountain is bordered on the east by Humber Station Rd., which is mainly rolling foothills, and to the west it butts up against the Niagara Escarpment. The largest hills can be found between Airport Rd. and the Escarpment. This particular route has two climbs between these two points. St. Andrews Rd. and Heart Lake Rd. Two solid category 4 climbs.

The routes starts in the small village of Terra Cotta on the scenic road of King St. As you cycle out of the valley look to your left and you will see a wide creek with small rapids that will lead you up and out of the valley. The first climb of the day comes fast, but it's small and fairly easy to negotiate. As you cross over Mississauga Rd. flat, open countryside is set before you. If it's a headwind you're in for a battle. If you're lucky to have a tailwind you'll feel like a beast and power through at speeds reserved only for your best days. As you turn north onto Centreville Creek Rd. the flat landscape now gives way to small rollers through picturesque farmland. The further north you go the bigger the rollers become. After a series of north to south and back again hill repeats you will come to the town of East Caledon. Look for a small strip mall on the east side of Airport Rd. just south of Old Churchill Rd. where you will find a bakery and a sometimes busy hangout for cyclists. Baked goods and coffee are being served.

After filling up on treats and caffeine your two big tests of the day are close at hand. The first cat. 4 climb is on St. Andrews Rd. The approach to the climb proper is a series of rollers. Some of these are actually quiet large requiring out of the saddle efforts. As soon as you cross the Grange Side Rd. the fun begins. Look up and you'll see a big bend to the right. That's where you're going. Once you get to the low stone wall you have about 1.3 km to the top at the Escarpment Side Rd. You'll continue north and hit a few more stiff climbs where you'll then turn left onto Charleston Side Rd. A thrilling descent awaits on Horseshoe Hill Rd. Be careful here. The roads can be rutted and you will reach speeds upwards of 70 kph. Before you know it you'll be climbing again on Heart Lake Rd., another cat. 4 climb. The elevation gain is almost the same as the climb on St. Andrews Rd., but this time it is straight up with no curves or bends.

Once reaching the top of Heart Lake Rd. the route has a 4 km spell on a fairly busy road. When you get to Willoughby Rd. you will turn right. A short ways up the road you will see a large hill looking straight at you. That's where you're going. Right to the top. At the top you'll cycle along the southern edge of Orangeville and then descend south into Alton. From here you keep heading south to Mississauga Rd. where a stiff switch back road has you climbing the slopes of the escarpment near the Caledon Ski Hills. This climb is not rated, but it should be. It's fairly short, but the gradients will top out in the double digits for about 500 meters. You'll be out of the saddle for sure.

From the top of the climb the rest of the route is fairly flat with nothing further to test your legs. That is until you are close to the end and you have to climb out Cheltenham. You will head south down into a valley, coast through the village and then climb up the other side. It's not the easiest of climbs especially after having almost 150 k in your legs. Once you top out, you'll turn right onto King St. and coast your way down the hill back to where you first began.
